- Hi Evert de Vos,
-
-
- someone asks:

-
- EV> Are people still buying A500's? Funny. 1084S is possible yes, I
- EV> myself have one. Overscan does not depend on the monitor, but on the
- EV> OS. If you have kick 2.0 or higher, you will be able to use
- EV> overscan. If you still have kick 1.3 or lower, not without tricks.
-
- Insert interlace where the guy writes 'overscan', he is asking about
- using high-res screen modes, and yes, the 1084 will do them, most of the
- 1084's also over your way will in fact also do PAL screen modes. But it
- probably will be cheaper to look for another 1084 second hand than to
- hae it repaired. They guy doesn't say what he uses as monitor right now,
- but if it can show a tv-picture, then it can also display NTSC high-res,
- but *not* without flicker. Getting a working 1084, and then finding one
- of the utils that can force the A500 in PAL-mode would give him 256
- lines on the screen instead of 200, and it sure helps. The 1084 may need
- a bit of picture size adjustment, but it can in fact (generally
- speaking, there are quite a few models and they probably could be
- manufactured at three different Philips plants in the far East) usually
- autosync to anything between 'the late forties' and the 'early sixties'.
- It takes more info to know whether the agnus in his machine is in fact
- able to switch to PAL-mode, and I for one can't remember what version it
- must be to be able to so do, but PAL low res is a very nice screen mode
- on that machine, also because it doesn't strain the system too much, i.
- e. doesn't cause additional waitstates.
-
- As for overscan, no problem - real overscan that is, the 1084 can handle
- that too, in fact is is possible to make the computers picture larger
- than the 1084's, unless the 1084 is re-adjusted, but I think external
- controls will do what is needed. And there are utils that can do it,
- such as for instance 'morerows', look on early fish disks, numbers
- between approximately 130 and 200, there ought to be several utils for
- that and other handy A500 specific stuff 'somewhere around there'.
